Freestyle wrestling is Olympic style of wrestling. The rules and techniques are a little bit different then Folkstyle High School wrestling. Again we are very proud of the accomplishments of our Freestyle program. Many of the state’s elite wrestlers got their start here and have gone on to become State, Regional, and National Champions including NCAA Division I National Champion Aaron Holker who won his NCAA title at Iowa St. in 2001 (by the way, when Aaron stepped on the stage for his championship match and took off his Iowa St. warm up, guess what he was wearing? Yup- a Mat Bandit T-shirt! ). Freestyle tournaments are held every Saturday and are usually individual tournaments. Wrestlers who wrestle Freestyle must have a USA wrestling card in order to compete. The Freestyle season starts in March and concludes with the State Tournament in April. Those who qualify and advance to the regional and national tournaments could continue through July with the Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo N.D.
